Sonia stands tall

The editorial "Turning outrage into applause" (March 24) is right in saying that Sonia Gandhi has, for the second time, turned apprehension into widespread applause. Her resignation as MP and chairperson of the National Advisory Council has made her stand tall in politics.

V. Bhimeswara Rao,
Kakinada, A.P.

Ms. Gandhi has won many admirers. It is clear she is above petty politics. She stands as a role model for other politicians.

P. Joycy,
Hyderabad

Sonia the politician and Sonia the person stand taller than any of the pseudo political giants. Foreigner Sonia is teaching Indian politicians a lesson or two on probity in public life.

S. Immanuel,
Chennai

Ms. Gandhi deserves the praise of all right thinking citizens. It is hoped other leaders allegedly holding offices of profit will also step down.

Salil Gewali,
Shillong

Ms. Gandhi not only silenced her critics but also exposed the BJP's unprincipled politics.

Daniel Rubaraj,
Madurai, T.N.

Whatever the motive behind her resignation, it is a welcome development in a political atmosphere of tall talk and no action.

K.K. Cherian,
Bangalore

It is the Opposition parties that are now in a catch-22 situation.

C. Balasubramanian,
Chennai

`Tainted' Ministers and MPs should take a leaf or two out of Ms. Gandhi's book.

R. Kannan,
Chennai

Let Ms. Gandhi's resignation mark the beginning of value-based politics. Let other MPs holding offices of profit follow her example, instead of waiting for an ordinance to save them.

R. Venkataraman,
New Delhi

Ms. Gandhi's resignation is indeed a great example to the ordinary politician. The BJP should stop remaining under the illusion that by shouting inside and outside Parliament, it is weakening its rival.

P.V.D. Paul,
Chennai

It is unfortunate that the BJP is targeting Ms. Gandhi rather than trying to get a broader definition for the term `office of profit.' Until it is defined in definitive terms, the MPs should wait rather than resign and force elections on the people.

E. Muralidharan,
Chennai
