Bad precedent

Ms. Gandhi has set a bad precedent. It is the people who have to bear the expenses for a re-election in Rae Bareli. If it was a question of propriety, she should have declined the post of NAC chairperson.

Instead of resigning, Ms. Gandhi should have proved that the post of UPA chairperson does not constitute an office of profit. She has only thrust another election on the common man.

Ms. Gandhi has exploited the adverse situation and sought to project her image at the cost of the people's hard earned money. There is absolutely no justification for an MP to resign and seek re-election from the same constituency. A law should be made saying there can be a re-election to a constituency only if the vacancy is caused by death or incapacitation of a member.

It should also be stipulated that in the event of the incumbent resigning for personal reasons, he or she shall not contest from the same constituency during the pendency of the term.

In the event of an elected representative resigning, his or her party should have the right to nominate another. Or the person who finished second in the election should automatically fill the vacancy.

As a politician, Ms. Gandhi should have displayed some courage. Her resignation shows that she does not have the courage to face criticism.

Ms. Gandhi's resignation has reiterated her desire to avoid the ugly scenes that Parliament and the nation would have been witness to. But she has also obstructed the emergence of a consensus on the office of profit issue. She could have waited for the final verdict of the Election Commission.

I am surprised Ms. Gandhi's inner voice remained silent when crisis after crisis unfolded in Jharkhand, Goa, and Bihar. It looks like the voice becomes active only when her image is at stake, not when the nation's interests are.

Lohith M. Jajee,
Bangalore
