Six youngsters from Guntur district propose to set up an adventure club and vow to save the neglected `Kondaveedu Kota'

REACHING THE HEIGHTS: Youngsters participating in rappelling at Horsely Hills in Chittoor district as part of an adventure training programme that concluded on Thursday.

GUNTUR: An adventure club will be a reality in Guntur very soon with six youths from the district attending a rock-climbing training programme at Horsely Hills in Chittoor district recently.

With Kondaveedu Kota as base for such training camps, the youngsters propose to begin the club with support from experts in this sport. "The historical fort and surroundings have the right environs for creating such a club," says T.V. Bhaskar who led the delegation from the district.

The efforts of people and the Government will receive an impetus with such programmes taken up on behalf of the club, he opined explaining the efforts already made by the Phirangeepuram-based youth organisation `Siri'.

It has organised several trekking camps in the fort and surrounding forest area. Competitions were held for members in completing a particular route by climbing up to the fort.

Training programme

A training programme for 75 youths from 12 districts in the State organised from March 19 to 23 at Horsely Hills came in handy for Bhaskar, G. Venkateswar Reddy, P. Joseph, T. Rajesekhar, K. Ramesh, and B. Durga Prasad in learning all aspects of climbing and rappelling. Inspired by the speeches of Nehru Yuvak Kendra Zonal Director M. Surahmanayam and Chittoor Sub-Collector, K. Babu, they opine that saving Kondaveedu Kota, which has been neglected over the years, will be their goal.

The historical structure, a fertile ground for those vandalising our historical heritage, can be protected if such activities pick in its vicinity, they add.

Six of them enjoyed the stay with youth from Krishna, East and West Godavari, Prakasam, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Kadapa and Yanam to name some of them.

The rigorous exercises, training from the morning and tips from experts on trekking in jungles made them understand the nuances of survival in difficult conditions, said Rajasekhar hailing from Tullur.

The Adventure Club of Andhra Pradesh sponsored the programme along with the Nehru Yuvak Kendra.
