Protest against illegal construction

PONDICHERRY: People living in and around the Osuteri Lake protested against large-scale illegal construction on the lakebed on Friday.

Under the banner of the Co-ordination Committee for Protecting Osuteri Lake, the people holding play cards protested near the bus stand and called upon the Government to stop all constructions on the lakebed.

Members of the committee said the constructions would destroy the lake, which is one of the important nesting places for migratory birds. Besides this, the shrinking of the lake would cause flooding of the nearby villages during rainy season. As a next step, the committee is organising a signature campaign and also plans to boycott the coming Assembly election by the villagers.
