Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday dismissed as withdrawn a writ petition filed against the use of `hand' and `lotus' as elections symbols by the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in elections. The petition was dismissed by the Bench of Chief Justice V.K. Bali and Justice J.B. Koshy. The petition, filed by Stephan F. Rozaria, chairman, Niyama Sahaya Vedi, Thiruvananthapuram, alleged that the hand symbol had religious connotation as hands were depicted prominently on the photographs of Hindu gods. Lotus is the national flower of India. He alleged that by allotting these symbols, the Election Commission was allowing the political parties to exploit religious sentiments. He sought to quash the allotment of the two symbols to these parties.
Conviction upheld
Justice M. Sasidharan Nambiar confirmed the Ernakulam CBI Special Judge's order sentencing Biju Kumar, former Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) with Southern Railway, for embezzling fares collected from passengers who travelled without tickets during the period from January1993 to July 1993. The Judge confirmed the order while dismissing an appeal filed by Biju Kumar.
Direction
Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan directed the secretary and president of the Amballoor grama panchayat in Ernakulam district to allow Manojkumar who was declared elected from Ward 13 by the Ernakulam Munsiff Court to take oath.
