Government urged to withdraw awards

Staff Reporter

Two films ineligible: Chandrashekar

BANGALORE: The Government must withdraw the awards announced for two films, "Mona Lisa" and "Gowdru", which are remakes. Otherwise it will set a bad precedent and also convey the wrong signal to the people, the senior Congress member B.K. Chandrashekar warned in the Legislative Council on Friday.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Prof. Chandrashekar said it is shocking to see that the selection committee and the advisory committee allowed the two films to pass when it is well-known that "Mona Lisa" is a remake of a Malayalam movie and "Gowdru" is based on a Tamil movie.

The makers of "Mona Lisa" edited portions of the film after the Censor Board had cleared it and they can be penalised for that offence, Prof. Chandrashekar said.

Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy said he would discuss the matter of withdrawing the awards with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and, in future, ensure that such films are not short-listed.
