They are not responding to people's grievances, regrets Speaker

Krishna

BANGALORE: Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna said in the House on Friday that the Government seems to have lost control over its officials and they are not responding to the grievances of the people. The Government must exercise control over officials, otherwise they will be a law unto themselves.

He made the observation during a debate on a farmer's death in Koppal district.

Earlier, during Zero Hour, Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh said Basappa, 45, a farmer, committed suicide by consuming poison in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Koppal. The delay by officials in solving a land dispute was the reason for the suicide. The Government should order an inquiry into the issue and provide adequate compensation to the farmer's family, he said.

Action promised

Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar said the farmer committed suicide over a land dispute. He has sought details from the Deputy Commissioner about the incident. Action will be taken against the official responsible for the delay in solving the dispute, Mr. Shettar said.

Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali), who stood up to speak on the issue, was warned by the Speaker. The member was sternly told to follow the rules of the House. "You cannot stand and speak without my permission. You have to follow the rules and regulations of the House," Mr. Krishna warned Mr. Nagaraj.

He also told M. Mahadev (JD-S) not to speak without the permission of the Chair. Ruling party members applauded the Speaker's stand.

Later, Mr. Nagaraj apologised to the Speaker.

Mr. Krishna said it will be difficult for him to maintain decorum in the House if members do not follow the rules.
