Bangalore: Hundreds of people medical and nursing students, general practitioners and members of the public joined hands to spread awareness on tuberculosis in a march organised by the Karnataka State Tuberculosis Association and the Karnataka State Tuberculosis Control Coordination Committee to mark World TB Day here on Friday. Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok, Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna and Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan took part in the march. Later, speaking at a function organised to mark World TB Day, Mr. Ashok said there is a need for community participation for implementing the DOTS scheme under the Revised National TB Control Programme to help combat tuberculosis. General practitioners should come forward as DOTS providers and help in the treatment of tuberculosis, he said. D. Thangaraj, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, said people with TB should not hesitate to take the medicines provided by the Government for the treatment of the disease. There is no doubt about the quality of these drugs as they have been approved by the World Health Organisation and provided by the Union Government, he added.
