Pratima nets hat-trick

NEW DELHI: Pratima Tirkey pumped in four goals including a hat-trick to fashion Orissa's 10-0 win against Kerala while Tamil Nadu won 3-0 against Chandigarh in the league matches of the NTPC 54th women's National hockey championship at the Shivaji Stadium here on Friday.

Pratima's fellow forwards Ejreen Dadel and Binita Xess slotted in three goals each to put Orissa on top of Pool `D'. Uttar Pradesh, the third team in the pool, meets Orissa on Saturday to decide who moves into the six-team super league.

Binita opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Ejren and Pratima chipped in. Pratima's hat-trick came when she converted a penalty corner in the 45th minute before smashing in field goals in the 53rd and 56th minutes.

Elena strikes for TN

In Pool `C', the match between Tamil Nadu and Chandigarh produced no thrilling moments. Tamil Nadu went up through E. Christy Elena's reverse shot that rose high and dropped into the top right corner of the post in the ninth minute.

A. B. Priya made it 2-0 three minutes later and skipper L. Nancy scored the winning goal in the 27th minute.

On change of ends, Tamil Nadu struggled to get past Chandigarh despite earning three penalty corners. Tamil Nadu meets Delhi in the decider on Saturday.

In the third match of the day, Madhya Pradesh downed Manipur 2-1 in Pool `B'. With two straight losses, Manipur and Chandigarh made an early exit.
