`Illiteracy an impediment to women's progress'

HUBLI: President of South Western Railway Women's Welfare Organisation Bina Perti has said that illiteracy among women is an impediment in their emancipation.

Inaugurating a lecture programme organised by the organisation as part of International Women's Day celebrations on Wednesday, Ms. Perti called upon women to identify their strengths and make use of them to gain economic strength first. Economic strength and independence in turn will give them social and political independence and pave the way for their emancipation, she said.

Ms. Perti said women have proved their mettle in teaching, information technology, marketing, automobile industry and have successfully taken up self-employment.

Later, she distributed awards to women employees of South Western Railway who emerged as winners in several competitions.

Experts gave lecture on "Balanced diet for women and stress management" along with a slide show on the occasion, which was followed by an interactive session.

Anita Mainrai, Divisional President of SWRWO, Kamna Garg, Secretary, Neeraja Jawa, Treasurer, Reen Ranjan, Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer, SWR, Jamuna Kanakaraya, Senior Divisional Medical Officer were present. Deepa Kotnis proposed a vote of thanks.
