KHAMMAM: The administration will take up full-fledged repair to the irrigation tanks which have developed breaches following the heavy rain in September last, according to Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje. Quoting Principal Secretary, Irrigation, S. P. Takkar, who reviewed with him the progress in irrigation works in a video conference on Friday, he said the Government had indicated release of Rs. 5 crores for the repair of the 495 irrigation tanks affected by the rain and floods. He said that the works would be executed in the summer. He explained that moves were afoot for taking up repair to 1191 irrigation tanks in the district at a cost of Rs. 19 crores under the NREGA. In all, 1340 tanks were renovated and strengthened at a cost of Rs. 17 crores under the Food-for-work programme last year. He said that attention would be paid to the repair of the Nagarjunasagar left canal as well. The carrying capacity of the canal should be enhanced considerably. Farmers in the ayacut got only 3000 cusecs as against 4500 cusecs released to zone II. The tail-end farmers were complaining of either non- supply or partial supply. Attention would be paid to irrigation facilities for the upland areas. Her said that the administration had shouldered the task of educating the farmers on effective water management. The focus was mainly on irrigated dry crops.
