Water crisis grips two town area in Eluru

Staff Reporter

Municipal Commissioner promises normal supply

AGONISING WAIT: A long queue of women with empty pots, waiting for their turn in front of a tanker at Chodidibba Centre in Eluru on Friday.

ELURU: Rows of empty pots from dawn to dusk, depicting the gravity of acute water scarcity, greet the visitors in most of the areas in Two Town area in the city. Running after water tankers and long treks for a pail of water have become a part of the routine for women in these areas.

"I am forced to wait in the queue for hours to get only four pots of water which is hardly sufficient to meet my household requirements," says Kadam Sarojani of Kothapet. "The amount of time I am spending for getting water is quite more than the time I spend to earn my daily bread," adds Sarojani who lives on selling curd.

Worst-hit area

The woes of Kadam Sayamma, also a resident from Kothapet, are inexplicable. "As there are no water tankers coming to our area, I have to go to the neighbouring 49th division all the way to get water," she said. Women in the areas which do not have hand bores are feeling the brunt of the water problem. They either wait for hours for the arrival of water tankers or trek distances to fetch water. According to information, people in as many as 10 divisions are facing water shortage.

Official version

City Municipal Commissioner T. Suryanarayana attributed the water problem to replacement of pipelines necessitated by the works relating to construction of a low bridge near Powerpet railway station. He said 13 tankers were deployed for supply of drinking water in these areas. The water supply would be restored by Saturday in these areas as the works of replacing pipelines were completed.
