Survey conducted on Hindi knowledge

Staff Reporter

KURNOOL : A survey conducted by students of the Silver Jubilee College has revealed that 44 per cent of people in the city have the knowledge of Hindi. Eighteen students of the college, under the supervision of Reader in Hindi K. Indumathi, carried out the survey in 18 localities of the city taking five families as sample.

A total of 435 persons from 90 families were examined for the knowledge of the language. Over 45 per cent of them have speaking skills, 43.6 per cent writing, 49 per cent reading and 55 per cent can understand the language.

Dr. Indumathi has said they made certain inferences from the data that people from Kurnool have fair knowledge of Hindi when compared to other Rayalaseema and coastal districts of the state. The reasons for this are closeness to Hyderabad city where Hindi is popular, high percentage of Urdu-speaking Muslim population, deep impact of television and introduction of Hindi as second language at Intermediate and degree level.
