HYDERABAD: An emergency meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) paid rich tributes to AICC president Sonia Gandhi as a `tall personality' in contemporary politics in the light of her resignation from Parliament and as chairperson of the National Advisory Council (NAC).

Presiding over the meeting during a recess of the Assembly on Friday, CLP leader and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy criticised the BJP and other parties for targeting her.

He said the chairmanship of NAC which was branded by these parties an office of profit was, in fact, a post accruing routinely to the head of the ruling party. The Leader of the Opposition enjoyed a similar status.

APCC president K. Keshava Rao, who was invited to the meeting as guest, criticised the BJP's witch-hunting against Ms. Gandhi. Mr. Rao said Ms. Gandhi gave him and the Chief Minister a patient hearing when they met her in Delhi on Thursday evening.

Executive panel meet

The executive committee of the APCC at a separate meeting at Gandhi Bhavan passed a similar resolution praising Ms. Gandhi. Dr. Reddy and Dr. Rao addressed the meeting.
