Ugadi Puraskar for student

TIRUPATI: Kanala Chakravarthy, 18, of Tirupati has been selected for Ugadi Puraskar for his outstanding achievement in maths, astronomy and computer sciences. The B.Tech student has performed mathematical feats and won awards like `'Uddanda Balabhaskara,' `Sapthagiri Saraswati Putra' and 'Abhinava Aryabhatta.' The award will be presented to him by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on March 30 at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

Teachers' caution

NIZAMABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has cautioned Telangana legislators against the alleged attempts by Andhra MLAs to stop the implementation of the Girglani Commission recommendations by saying that they are "false" and the report has many lapses.

APTF district president B. Devi Singh and general secretary K. Ramana took exception to the submission of a memorandum by 100 MLAs opposing the recommendations of the commission. - Staff Reporter

PECET applications

TIRUPATI: Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam will conduct the Physical Education Common Entrance Test (PECET-2006), the entrance test for the one-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) and two-year UGDPEd in all colleges. According to PECET Convenor G. Sara Sarojini, applications would be issued from March 27 and the last date for submission is April 26. The examinations are slated to commence on May 10. - Staff Reporter

Naxals paste posters

NALGONDA: Naxalites of the CPI (Maoist) pasted posters in various places in Pedda Adisarlapally on Thursday night. More than 10 posters were found at P.A. Pally, Dugyal and Tirumalagiri. The Sagar Area Committee is said to have released the posters, in which critical comments were made against the Congress Government. The naxals raised objections to the proposed uranium project and operations of the realtors. - Staff Reporter

SSC student suffers burns

KADAPA: An SSC student Yatigna (15) sustained severe burns in her house in Bethel Colony in Rayachoti town on Thursday night while lighting a kerosene lamp when power went off. She was administered first-aid at Rayachoti Government Hospital and rushed to Tirupati. - Staff Reporter

Girl ends life

NIZAMABAD: Allegedly duped by her lover Fakku, an autorickshaw driver, 18-year-old Reshma of Rajivnagar Colony in Kamareddy town committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Thursday night. Fakku and Reshma were neighbours and had fallen in love last year. Victim's father Sadulla and his supporters ransacked Fakku's home by breaking the lock. Later, they staged a dharna in front of the home for a while. The police registered a case under Section 420 and 306 of the IPC against Fakku and his family members and arrested six persons. - Staff Reporter,

SI in ACB net

VIZIANAGARAM: K. Koteswara Rao, Bondapalli police station SI, was trapped and arrested by ACB sleuths in a lodge here on Friday. The SI demanded and accepted Rs. 10,000 as first instalment from one Hamidullah Khan of Guntur, whose truck was involved in an accident in which six persons were killed, for not registering a case. - Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A joint evaluation made by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India, has categorised the Srisailam Left Bank Hydro-electric project as "model project" of the country.

Red sanders worth Rs. 50 lakhs seized

TIRUPATI : Piler flying squad sleuths seized logs of red sanders worth Rs.50 lakhs along with a Maruti van on the Piler-Talapula road on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team, led by DFO P. Visweswaraiah, intercepted a van which sped past without stopping at a check-post.

When the two persons in the vehicle fled the scene, the sleuths seized 22 red sanders logs weighing 600 kg along with the vehicle. - Staff Reporter

Bear kills man

KURNOOL : A wood-cutter was killed by a wild bear near Gajulapalli in Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, Guruvaiah, 45, went into the forest in the early hours to collect firewood.

He was attacked by a bear and died. - Staff Reporter

CITU activists picket power sub-station

KADAPA : CITU activists picketed the 220-power transmission sub-station at Sankarapuram here on Friday demanding reinstatement of four contractual power workers.

CITU district general secretary N. Ravisankar Reddy alleged that officials were ignoring the demand despite phased agitations.

When agitators obstructed officials, Transco Vigilance ASP Khaleel and Chinna Chowk Circle-Inspector Nagaraju discussed the issue with Transco Director who promised reinstatement of the workers.

Forensic experts conduct post-mortem

KADAPA : Forensic professors of Kurnool General Hospital -- M.S.R.K. Prasad and Sankar -- on Friday conducted post-mortem on Lakke Durga, 18, who died allegedly due to complications arising out of tonsils operation two days ago.

A Government ENT surgeon performed the operation in a private hospital on Wednesday.

The doctor was arrested following a complaint by relatives of the deceased. On the demand, forensic experts of Kurnool were requisitioned for post-mortem. The doctors said they would submit the post-mortem report to court in two days. - Staff Reporter

Officials' night halt at remote village

KURNOOL : Top brass of the district administration, led by Collector Vikas Raj, camped at Kaminahal, a remote village in Halaharvi mandal of Kurnool district, on Friday night.

On arriving at the village at 4.30 p.m., the Collector reviewed the watershed programme at the village.

Rice was distributed under the food security programme.

The villagers urged the Collector to sanction a road for the village.

VIZIANAGARAM: One more 10th class student was debarred for malpractice in English paper-I in Sithanagaram Zilla Parishad High School on Friday, according to Assistant Commissioner (examination) A. Nagabhushanam. - Correspondent

English practical examination

VIZIANAGARAM: The newly introduced English practical examination -- a computer based test in communication skills -- for first year degree students will be held from March 27 to April 20 at the 57 centres identified by Andhra University in the five districts -- West Godavari, East Godavari, Visakhaptnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. Students have been instructed to contact their respective principals for date and time of the exam. - Correspondent

Development of irrigation potential

SRIKAKULAM: Proposals for development of small-scale irrigation potential as part of interior areas development scheme in selected mandals will be sanctioned, Special Secretary of Small Scale Irrigation, Takkar, has said. Participating in a videoconference with Collector A. Koteswara Rao and other officials here on Friday, Mr. Takkar said schemes meant for taking up permanent repairs to damaged water sources caused by natural calamities with an estimated cost of Rs. 30 lakhs and less could be sanctioned at the district level. - Special Correspondent

Credit plan launched

Kakinada: Joint Collector M. Dana Kishore launched the district's annual credit plan document for the year 2006-07 and also the `acrobat version' of the plan at a meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday.

The total outlay of the annual credit plan registered a 15.44 per cent increase over last year's plan outlay. - Correspondent

MRPS activists take out rally

ONGOLE: Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) activists took out a rally from Ambedkar Bhavan to Collectorate here on Friday demanding payment of ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs each to the kin of the two minor boys who were allegedly shot dead by Maoists at Pedda Bommalapuram village in Dornala mandal. The MRPS condemned the killing of the two boys on the plea that they were acting as police informers. It demanded the CPI (Maoist) to release the other two boys who are reportedly in their custody.- Special Correspondent

Ayurveda introduced at Chirala hospital

CHIRALA: Chirala Area Government Hospital becomes the first one in Coastal Andhra Pradesh to introduce ayurveda and homoeo system with doctors of the two branches -- Dr. G.Krishna Murthy and Dr. K.Lakshmanarao -- taking charge on Friday. Finance and Health Minister K. Rosaiah has promised introduction of all the four all the four systems of Indian Medicine --ayurveda, unani, siddha and homoeo -- in Chirala hospital so as to provide integrated treatment. -Correspondent

VRS and YRN college students excel in GATE

CHIRALA: The four-year-old VRS and YRN College of Engineering and Technology, Chirala achieved distinction when seven B.Tech students of the college were selected in GATE this year for admission into postgraduate courses of engineering in IITs. Fire mishap at school, no casualties

KHAMMAM: Leakage of cooking gas from the mid-day meal kitchen shed resulted in a fire accident in a primary school at Lakshmipuram village of Burgmupadu mandal on Friday. Some records and school furniture were partially burnt in the incident. The village people were successful in extinguishing the flames and helped in minimising the loss. The cook and other personnel engaged in cooking the meal managed to escape unhurt in the incident.- Staff Reporter
