Election Commission directive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Election Commission has asked the State electoral machinery to make arrangements in the polling booths for physically challenged and visually impaired persons to cast their votes. The Chief Electoral Officer said here on Saturday that there was provision in the rules to enable these persons to utilise the services of a helper to cast their votes. If necessary, they could be given preference in entering the booths. A separate queue could also be permitted for physically challenged persons. A temporary ramp should be arranged in buildings, which did not have them to enable the physically challenged persons to enter the polling booths in wheel chair. The Election Commission wanted the same consideration to be given to hearing impaired and speech impaired persons.

Higher secondary results on April 18

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The results of the first year higher secondary examinations held in February-March should be published by all higher secondary principals on April 18, a press note issued here on Friday said. The marks obtained in the continuous evaluation process should be published on April 6 and complaints, if any, should be rectified. Students in Wayand district who were not able to write the first year higher secondary examination on March 7 owing to the harthal there can appear for the Mathematics, Political science re-examination scheduled on April 7 from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Students should treat this as an intimation, the joint director, higher secondary, has said.

Equivalency exam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The results of the VII-level Equivalency Examination conducted by the Kerala State Literary Mission Authority in November 2005 have been published. Padmini M.V. (37), Muthulappoykayil House, Thalipparambu block, Kannur, topped the examination. She secured 477 parks out of 500. Of the 11,631 candidates who wrote the examinations, 10,082 passed. The State-wide pass percentage is 86.68. Alappuzha recorded the highest pass percentage of 97.77. Kasaragod (95.48) and Ernakulam (93.95) came second and third. Chelakkodan Ayishumma (84) of Malappuram, who had declared Kerala Total Literacy State in 1991 and who had appeared for the examination, passed by securing 343 marks. She is the oldest learner in the State to pass the examination.

Action against exam malpractice

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Higher Secondary Education Director will initiate disciplinary action against eight students and invigilators who were apprehended for examination malpractice during the higher secondary examinations this year. A press note issued here on Friday said the vigilance squads that conducted lightning inspections at the examination centres had detected the malpractice.

Temple consecration

KOLLAM: The consecration of the rebuilt Sri Gosthalakavu Devi Temple will be held between 11 a.m. and 12.05 p.m. on April 3. According to temple committee members, the temple was rebuilt at a cost of Rs.25 lakhs. The traditional Devi Pongala ritual will be held at 7 a.m. on April 2. - Staff Reporter

MLA hurt in accident

Thiruvananthapuram: Mangode Radhakrishnan, MLA, was admitted to the Medical College hospital with a fractured leg after he was knocked down by a scooter near Aaram Kallu, Nedumangad on Friday morning. Mr. Radhakrishnan was trying to cross the road when the accident occurred. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Local Administration Minister Kutty Ahammed Kutty released the book `Singapore Udyanangalude Nagaram' written by M.Yunus Kunju by handing over a copy to Joythi Dev Kesava Dev. Neuro surgeon Shaji Prabhakaran presided over the function held at the Press Club. — Staff Reporter

GCDA invites tenders for four plots

KOCHI: The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has invited bids for four of its plots. It has not called for bids for the two controversial plots at Manappattiparambu and at the High Court junction. The GCDA has invited Expressions of Interest for developing four plots on build-share-transfer basis — 123 cents and 85 cents at Manappattiparambu, 60 cents at Panampilly Nagar and 23 cents near the Eastern entry of Ernakulam South. The first two plots have Rs.5 lakhs and Rs.3 lakhs respectively as Earnest Money Deposit, Rs.2 lakhs for the plot at Panampilly Nagar and Rs.50,000 for eastern entry plot. — Staff Reporter

Meeting of political parties convened

ALAPPUZHA: A meeting of representatives of political parties in the district to discuss issues related to the elections will be held at the district collectorate on March 27 at 11.30 a.m., a release said. The Alappuzha Collector has requested all political parties to participate in the meeting. — Staff Reporter

Theft at mobile shop

THRISSUR: A mobile shop at Triprayar centre was looted on Thursday night. According to the complaint received by the police, the assailants broke open the door of the shop and had decamped with 13 mobile phones. — Staff Reporter

Panchayat president dead

THRISSUR: President of the Thiruvillwamala panchayat and a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Cheenikkulangara Veettil Kuttappan of Pattipparambu died on Friday following a massive heart attack. He was 38. He is survived by wife and a daughter. — Staff Reporter

Illegal telephone exchange busted

KOCHI: The vigilance team of Department of Telecom with the help of the city police on Friday unearthed an illegal telephone exchange in the city. The team led by Ernakulam North Circle Inspector D.S. Suneesh Babu and Palarivattom Sub-Inspector M.M. Jose raided the house at P.J. Antony Road, Palarivattom.

According to the police, the house had equipment for receiving incoming international calls as Internet data and then reverting them back to voice data, thereby causing immense revenue loss to the BSNL. The raid was conducted following a complaint lodged by Ramakrishna Majety, Assistant Divisional Engineer, Department of Telecom, Chennai. — Staff Reporter
