HYDERABAD: Jaya Bachchan has been in the thick of things, making national headlines in the last few weeks, but she chose to steer clear of political issues here on Thursday. But talk about cinema and she brightens up.

She was in the city on a short visit to attend the screening of Govind Nihalani's `Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa' organised by the film club, Moving Images, in lieu of celebrating Women's Day and raising a toast to womanhood.

At ease

She seemed to be at ease addressing members of the film club and select invitees, mostly comprising women, and said, "Despite not knowing many of you who've gathered here, I feel at home. Perhaps because when you are a housewife and middle-aged, you connect better."

Moving on to talk about Govind Nihalani's film, which served as her comeback movie after a long gap, she recollected, "Nihalani and my husband had long discussions and somehow things were not falling into place. Then, he gave me a collection of stories written by Maha Sweta Devi and had marked one particular story that he wanted me to read.

"The story was about a tribal woman and her struggle for her son. I was moved and could connect with the troubles the tribal lady was going through. Because it was the time when my daughter Swetha was getting married. Giving away your daughter is a tough task for each parent. Despite being assured that she will be well looked after, you feel that a part of you is leaving you forever." This thought, she said, made her agree to act in the film, which in retrospect is regarded as one of her most memorable movies.
