Congress workers continue to throng Delhi

K.V Prasad

NEW DELHI: Congress workers from across the country continued to pour into the capital expressing support to party president Sonia Gandhi who resigned from her Lok Sabha membership and as Chairperson of the National Advisory Council.

Party leaders including general secretaries and office-bearers, legislators, Chief Ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and Narayan Dutt Tiwari and State unit chiefs called on her. The party said Ms. Gandhi was planning to visit Rai Bareilly on Monday.

With the mood in the party on the upswing, the Congress launched a counterattack on the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and demanded an apology for carrying on a "campaign of disinformation".

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the opposition had based its premise on the grounds that the disqualification of Jaya Bachchan was in pursuit of policy of revenge and that the Government was making an attempt to protect Ms. Gandhi who was heading the NAC. He also said the effort by the Opposition was to paint a picture that Ms. Gandhi was desperate to hold on to her office and that an ordinance "which no one had seen" was being promulgated.

"The Opposition had nothing to do but to go around with egg on their face and any responsible Opposition should apologise to the nation for this campaign of disinformation," Mr. Singhvi said.
