Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress on Friday adopted a resolution commending AICC president Sonia Gandhi for resigning from the post of chairperson, National Advisory Council and as member of the Lok Sabha. The resolution, passed in the presence of UPCC president Salman Khurshid, termed Ms Gandhi's move as "brave and in tune with ethos of Indian political system." "Ms Gandhi, by stepping down, has unmasked the move of BJP and Samajwadi Party to launch a personal attack against her," it added. Speaking to reporters here, Mr Khurshid said the resignation has pre-empted any move by the Opposition to project Ms Gandhi in bad light. On SP's logic that Ms Gandhi had resigned to avoid further insult on the issue of holding office of profit, Mr Khurshid said: "We still maintain that she was not holding an office of profit. Secondly, the bill in Parliament was not aimed at protecting Ms Gandhi, but to protect the 45 MPs of various parties who might face a problem over the issue." Later, Congress workers took out a procession in favour of Ms Gandhi. Raising slogans against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the workers equated the AICC president with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
