What's wrong in having fun on weekends?

Our readers say curbs on nightclubs or dance bars have not brought down the crime rate in the city. Youth should be allowed to decide how they want to spend their weekends.

Stop moral policing

Nightclub, disco or "dance bar", those who want to patronise them should be free to do so. Any kind of moral policing goes against the spirit of democracy. Not too long ago, the elders in the family used to frown upon their children going to the cinema. Now more of the 60-plus people watch reruns on television.

Allow it on weekends

People change and values too change. By going to a nightclub or dancing away the night alone, a person is not going to become a moral wreck.

There are enough puritans around who are filled with intolerance and hatred towards those different from them.

Nightclubs can stay open late on weekends as a compromise.

Views imposed

Compelling bars and clubs to close down at 11 p.m. has not brought down the crime rate in a significant manner. The city has enough people with lifestyles suited to late nights just as there are many who like to sleep by 10 p.m. What is galling is that the rigid views of a few about what is right and wrong are imposed on others.

Matter of choice

Provided late night carousing is indoors and does not disturb others, there is no reason to ask bars or discos to shut down early. By nature, these establishments are patronised by those for whom the day begins after sunset.

After all nobody is forced to go to a nightclub or dance bar. It is a matter of choice just like wearing a gaudy necktie or not.
