CHENNAI: With the southern textile industry slated for a 10 to 12 per cent growth during the year, the demand for trained professionals, especially in the areas of merchandising, production, quality control and design, will peak, says A.K.G. Nair, group director, Pearl Academy of Fashion, explaining the launch of Pearl Academy of Fashion here. "Because of the sheer volume produced, there will be a huge demand for professionals in merchandising and production more than for just designers," he says. "We are looking to cater to the international market, as global design accounts for a large per cent of our exports. The designs needed for the world market call for learned, informed and trained professionals. But we will also have a group studying the local retail market," says Mr. Nair. The academy, operating out of Delhi and Jaipur, will come up on Sterling Road, Nungambakkam, and admit 100 students in five courses with just 20 a class.
Courses offered
The courses offered include B.A. Honours from Nottingham Trent University, UK, in Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising and Production apart from postgraduate diploma programmes in Fashion Merchandising, Garment Manufacturing and Textile Design. "About 3,400 students took our all-India test last year for 270 seats," says an academy spokesperson. Application forms for this year's all-India entrance test to be held on June 4 will be available from April 3 at 82, Sterling Road, Nungambakkam. You can also contact them over phone at 28275191 or email chennai@pearlacademy.com. The last date for submission of applications is May 27. Students interested in design-related courses are required to a general proficiency test, a design aptitude test and a situation test (a team activity) before they attend a personal interview. Others interested in the business-related courses will have to take a general proficiency test and attend a group discussion and a personal interview. The institute boasts of a 100 per cent placement record with starting salary ranging from Rs.2.5 to Rs.4 lakh a year.
