SRINAGAR: Four MLAs from the Congress, heading Corporations and Boards in Jammu and Kashmir, have resigned following the controversy over the office of profit issue.

Sources told The Hindu that Abdur Rasheed Dar, Mohammad Shafi Bhat, G. M. Saroori and Girdhari Lal — have sent in their resignations to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as well as Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

While Mr. Dar was the chairman of Handicrafts Corporation, Mr. Saroori was the chief of Social Welfare Advisory Board, Mr. Bhat was heading the Agro Industries Development Corporation and Mr. Lal was heading the SC/ST Board.

"BJP conspiracy"

Mr. Dar confirmed that he had resigned and sent copies of his resignation letter to Mr. Azad and Ms. Gandhi.

However, Mr. Saroori said: "We do not come within the purview of the issue which is being debated right now but we resigned to press for Ms. Gandhi's withdrawal of resignation which is a result of the conspiracies of BJP."

In the morning, Mr. Azad as also the Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, told reporters in Jammu that all the four would be asked to resign.

A local news agency KIP quoted Mr. Azad as saying, "We will ask them to resign from their posts of profit after holding a meeting with them."
