TAMBARAM: A 49-year-old woman died when the motorcycle on which she was travelling with her husband was involved in an accident with a lorry on Grand Southern Trunk Road opposite Irumbuliyur bus stop near Tambaram on Friday evening. Tambaram Traffic Police Investigation Wing identified the victim as Bhuvaneswari.
Visiting docter
As she was suffering from an ear problem, she had come to Chromepet to visit an ENT specialist along with her husband, Srinivasan, 60. The couple were returning to their house at Old Perungulathur. When they neared the flyover on GST Road at Irumbuliyur, they collided with a goods-laden lorry bearing an Andhra Pradesh registration. Bhuvaneswari suffered head injuries when she fell on the road. Srinivasan too suffered bruises. The victim was rushed to a private hospital and later referred to the Chromepet GH, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The lorry driver has been arrested.
A death trap
Residents of Irumbuliyur described the stretch of GST Road as a "death trap" as several accidents, some of them fatal, occurred regularly. The road narrows at this point, with very little space for free flow of traffic. Dumping of sand on the western side of the road adds to the problems. There are no high-power lamps on the road. There is not even a single high-power lamp making it pitch dark after dusk. Residents said they hoped the road widening work undertaken by the State Highways Department between Kathipara and Irumbuliyur would be completed at the earliest.
