Dumping of garbage

Open drainage and uncleared waste are serious health hazards. Unfortunately, they happen to be the common sight in Coimbatore. While the `Face of Coimbatore' column of The Hindu dated March 14 carried the photograph of an open drainage along with a report, the issue on March 20 published the picture of uncleared waste with a write-up. They are just specimens, not exhaustive.

In some places, they are very conspicuous. The heap of waste people dump every day close to the compound of the Principal General Manager, BSNL, Coimbatore, located on Bharathi Park Road No.2 in Saibaba Mission area, is a testimony to this. While the people of the locality may choose to blame the authorities for not providing dust- bins, the authorities may accuse the people of non-cooperation.

A lasting solution to the problem should be found as blocked drainages and uncleared waste become breeding stations for mosquitoes.

The authorities have to provide adequate number of trash bins and ensure that proper drainages are provided for free flow of sewage. The public should also extend cooperation by avoiding indiscriminate throwing of trash, either on the streets or into the open drainages.

Stray dog menace

The task of eliminating 50,000 stray dogs from the city will be difficult if humane considerations are given importance.

This is a problem facing all the cities and it is worthwhile to study how they are managed in different places.
