KOCHI: The vigilance team of the Department of Telecom with the help of the city police on Friday unearthed an illegal telephone exchange in the city. The team led by Ernakulam North Circle Inspector D.S. Suneesh Babu and Palarivattom Sub-Inspector M.M. Jose raided the house at P.J. Antony Road, Palarivattom. According to the police, the house had equipment for receiving incoming international calls as Internet data and then reverting them back to voice data, thereby causing immense revenue loss to BSNL. The raid was conducted following a complaint lodged by Ramakrishna Majety, Assistant Divisional Engineer, Department of Telecom, Chennai. The drive against illegal telephone exchanges is important not just on revenue aspect, but also on national security. This parallel system makes it impossible to trace international calls, as tracking would lead only up to the illegal exchange placed inside the country. On investigation it was found that a person named T. Ashraf had rented out the house, but the suspect could not be arrested.
