Official arrested

Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested V. Benkani of Inland Navigation Corporation while accepting bribe from a contractor. The CBI case against the arrested is that he demanded bribe from a complainant for clearing the bills of some construction works. The arrested will be produced before a court on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Vigilance raid

Kochi: The special cell of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau on Friday conducted a raid at the house of a Deputy Transport Commissioner and reportedly seized assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Searches were conducted at the Kakkanad and Kundannoor residences of the official, and also at some of the business ventures in the city. — Staff Reporter

CBI inquiry demanded

Kochi: The Kerala State Private Bus Owners Federation has demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged instances of corruption in the construction of the Mattanchery Bridge on build-operate-transfer basis and the toll collection. The role of political leaders and officials in connection with the corruption should be probed, federation president M. Khalid Mundappilly said. — Staff Reporter

KOCHI: District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish inaugurated Nirmaan 06, a technical festival organised by the Department of Civil Engineering at Cochin University of Science and Technology on Friday. Chemistry seminar

KOCHI: P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, inaugurated a seminar on ``Modern trends in Chemistry'' organised by the Department of Applied Chemistry on Friday. In his inaugural address, Mr. Azis urged faculty members of the university to share their expertise in solving various problems faced by industrial units in Aluva and Kalamassery. The seminar will conclude on Saturday. — Staff Reporter
