GUNTUR: The Gurazala police on Friday arrested a gang leader of burglars, Devara Tirumala Rao, 35, who was involved in a number of cases in Guntur, Prakasam and Nalgonda districts and recovered 35 sovereigns of gold valued at Rs.2 lakhs from him. Disclosing this to newspersons here, Guntur Additional Superintendent of Police S. Ranga Reddy said that the accused was involved in house burglaries in Macherla, Guntur, Amaravathi, and Narsaraopet towns in the district. The accused earlier underwent imprisonment four times. During interrogation, the police had gathered information on the other five members of the gang. One of them was arrested last month. "We will nab the other members soon," Mr. Reddy said.
Spurious seed seized
The Guntur city police arrested three persons on the charge of selling spurious Bt cottonseeds and recovered 60 bags of seeds from them. According to Guntur Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Ravindranath Babu, two persons -- Chinna Mallikarjuna Rao, 30, and Karumuri Anji Reddy, 45, were selling seeds in the Patnam Bazar area on Friday morning when the police, on reliable information, took action. The two confessed to having sold spurious seed for one month to farmers. They said they had procured the seed from one Mr. Chunduru Lakshminarasimha Rao of Chandramouli Nagar in the city, whom the police arrested later.
