  • Special numbers to enable the police to maintain the record of driver and owner of every vehicle
  • Owners of auto-rickshaws must go to police station on specified dates for registration
  • Locking of speed limit to reduce accidents involving auto-rickshaws
  • Helmet mela from today at PWD Grounds

VIJAYAWADA: Special numbering system for auto-rickshaws plying in the city limits will come into force on Saturday. Speed of the auto-rickshaws will be locked by the technicians of Transport Department at 40 kmph. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) T. Prabhakara Babu said here on Friday that the Transport Department and the city police had devised the method to provide special numbers to auto-rickshaws to curb the entry of three-wheelers registered outside the city.

The new numbers would be given to 200 auto-rickshaws belonging to one-town areas at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium.

The serial numbers allotted to auto-rickshaws under every police station purview would be embossed on the rear side of the vehicles.

These special numbers would enable the police to maintain the record of driver and owner of every vehicle. Owners of auto-rickshaws in the city must go to police station of their respective areas on specified dates and have their vehicles registered with them.

They should take the original and photo copies of the registration certificates. A tamper-proof authorisation certificate would be given to every vehicle. The permanent address and other details would be obtained from the owners and an authorisation certificate with photo identity would be given to them.

The locking of speed limit would help reduce accidents involving auto-rickshaws, said Deputy Transport Commissioner M. Ratnamanikyam.

Details of the auto-rickshaws and the designated dates on which they would be given special numbers would be put on display at all police stations, police control room, Pandit Nehru Bus Station, railway station and auto-rickshaw stands.

    Meet put off

The traffic advisory board meeting, slated for Saturday, has been postponed to April 4, as a few important officials will be out of station. The ACP said that helmet mela would be conducted from Saturday at PWD Grounds from 10 a/m.
