CHENNAI: The Union government has established a 23-member Development Council for the Sugar Industry with a two-year tenure. According to a notification (dated March 16, 2006) issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion), the Secretary to the Government in the Department of Food and Public Distribution will be the Chairman of the council, while the Joint Secretary In Charge of Sugar in the department will be its member-secretary. Members of the council include three members of parliament (Balasaheb Vikhe Patil and Sadasihvrao Dadoba Mandlik from the Lok Sabha and Akhilesh Das from the Rajya Sabha), a representative each of the Planning Commission and the IFCI, representatives of associations of anufacturers of sugar as also khandsari, the NCDC and sugar institutes.
