GORAKHPUR: An estimated 38 per cent polling was recorded in Kauriram Assembly by-election in Uttar Pradesh which concluded on a peaceful note, here today. According to UP election office sources, the polling was by and large peaceful and 38 per cent of the 3,26,000 voters exercised their franchise. Counting of votes will be taken up on March 27. Bypoll to the constituency was necessitated after the Supreme Court quashed the election of Ram Bhual Nishad, now with the SP. In the 2002 elections, Nishad -- then a BSP candidate -- had won the seat, but later switched over to the SP. A total of seven candidates are in fray including Nishad (SP), Shital Pandey (BJP) . - UNI
