Everest expedition flagged off

NEW DELHI:
Union Home Minister Shivraj V. Patil flagged off a 28-member Indo-Tibetan Border Police expedition to Mount Everest at a function here on Saturday. This is the third ITBP expedition to Everest, the earlier two being in 1992 and 1996.
Led by Additional Deputy Inspector-General Harbhajan Singh, the team will attempt to scale the world's highest peak through the North face via Tibet that is considered the most difficult and technically challenging route.
Mr. Patil wished all the team members grand success. ITBP Director-General V. K. Joshi said the team had its task cut out and expressed confidence that it would make the nation proud.
Aimed at inculcating a spirit of adventure, exploration and inquisitiveness among its personnel as well as developing their stamina, endurance and self-confidence, the ITBP expedition is a healthy mix of experienced and new mountaineers. It has 28 ITBP personnel including a woman climber. Deputy leader Prem Singh and two other members ITBP expeditions.
Besides climbing the peak, the team will also clear waste material en route so as to maintain the pristine beauty and ecological balance of the mountains.
