KOCHI: General Motors (GM) India will launch a small car this year. The car is expected to offer competition to popular small-car models already on the road, according to its director and vice-president (corporate affairs) P. Balendran. The company is launching three models this year. They include Chevrolet Aveo, which was launched here on Saturday. Aveo U-VA and Optra SRV are to be launched later. Mr. Balendran said the company would emerge as a volume player. The target was to get 10 per cent market share by 2010. Kerala was a very important market for the company, which hoped to sell 17,000 cars in the State this year. He said Chevrolet Aveo was a global product incorporating the latest technology and meeting the highest standards of quality. It had been re-engineered, based on extensive testing across the country to meet the specific needs of customers as well as local driving conditions and regulations. The Aveo variants had been priced between Rs. 5.55 lakhs and Rs. 6.14 lakhs. Mr. Balendran said the company's service network was being extended to 84 cities in the country and dealership network from 77 sales points to 110. GM had a manufacturing facility at Halol, near Baroda, in Gujarat. The capacity of the plant was being increased from 60,000 units to 85,000 units. The company already produced Chevrolet Optra and Chevrolet Tavera. The Aveo was being rolled out in more than 140 countries, including the U.S. Unveiling of the model followed GM India's launch of the 2006 NY edition of Chevrolet Tavera recently. GM India had introduced a round-the-clock centralised call centre to attend to customer complaints and provide information related to its products.
