Special Correspondent

Tamil Nadu circle's achievements highlighted

PONDICHERRY: The Principal General Manager (Operations) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Tamil Nadu Circle, T.S. Kuppuswamy, has said that the circle was now serving as many as 14.5 lakh mobile phone subscribers and 43 lakh basic phone subscribers. Distributing Sanchar Sarathy Awards and Sanchar Seva Padaks for 2004-2005 to staff of the Pondicherry Telecom district here on Saturday, Mr. Kuppuswamy said that the team spirit in the entire telecom sector had enabled the organisation to scale greater heights.

The circle had lowest fault rate in the country. The circle had bagged four national-level awards. The WLL (Wireless Local Loop) system helped meet the rising demand for new connections.

Phone on demand would be available in the circle with effect from August. An applicant need not wait for more than a week to get a connection. The undertaking had established 188 WLL towers.

Referring to the popularity of cell phone facility, Mr. Kuppuswamy said that although there was capacity to provide service only to 6.5 lakh subscribers the circle was serving as many as 8.5 lakh subscribers.

The management had planned to raise the capacity to cater for 18 lakh subscribers by August this year. The number of towers would also be raised to 1,100 against 750 towers now available.

The broadband facility had become popular: Against the capacity of 20,000 subscribers as many as 19,000 subscribers are being served now. The facility would soon be expanded to serve one lakh subscribers.

Tamil Nadu had emerged the first ranker, he said and attributed the growth to team spirit and dedicated work on the part of the staff.

General Manager, BSNL, Pondicherry, S.M. Kalavathy, said the Pondicherry Telecom district was ranked second — next to Coimbatore — in providing telecom services.
