ALAPPUZHA: The 27th annual conference of Kerala State Small-Scale Coir Manufacturers' Federation will be held here on Monday, president of the federation M.P. Pavithran said here on Saturday. At a press conference here, Mr. Pavithran said the coir industry, especially small-scale manufacturers of coir products, was going through a crisis. The demand for coir products had decreased in domestic and foreign markets, and products made of other natural fibres were capturing the market. The promises made by the State Government to the industry had not been implemented. He demanded that the Union and the State governments intervene to save it. Mr. Pavithran said the conference would begin with a seminar on problems in the coir industry and their solutions. Coir Board Chairman A.C. Jose would inaugurate the seminar. Mr. Pavithran would present a paper. Coir exporters and trade union leaders, including Anathalavattom Anandan, general secretary of Coir Workers' Centre, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, T.J. Anjelose, general secretary, All-India Trade Union Congress district committee, and P. Binu, chairman of Coir Workers' Welfare Fund Board, would participate. A delegates' meeting would be held in the afternoon. Communist Party of India district secretary T. Purushothaman would inaugurate the meeting.
