5 held on kidnap charge

KADAPA : The police arrested five persons of Nandyal, including two women, on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping Sai Kumar, 8, son of an astrologer of Lohianagar here and demanding a ransom of Rs. 3 lakhs.

Sivaji, accused in some robbery and dacoity cases, allegedly kidnapped Sai Kumar, his paternal uncle's son, with the help of his friends when the boy went to school in SBI Colony on March 20, Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy told a press conference here.

Sivaji called up his uncle Egive Krishna Rao and threatened to kill the boy unless a ransom of Rs. 3 lakhs was paid, he said.

The police traced the phone caller from Hutchinson Essar South Ltd. office at Hyderabad and nabbed Sivaji. The boy was handed over to his family.-Staff Reporter

Global recognition for `Giri Pragna'

KHAMMAM : Yet another project based on the IT initiative of the Khammam district administration has entered the finals of the Stockholm challenge event 2006.

Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje told reporters on Saturday that Giri Pragna, a project developed for imparting computer education to over 10,000 tribal students in the sub-plan area of Khammam, emerged as one of the 30 finalists in the education category at the international event.

SSC re-examination

Hyderabad : The Government has decided to hold the SSC re-examination in the second language (0911) for 198 candidates of the Z.P. High School (boys), Pentlavelly centre of Mahabubnagar district, as their answer scripts were destroyed by some miscreants on March 23.

The re-examination will be held on April 4 from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Government Junior College for Girls, Kollapur.

In a press release, the Director, Government Examination, asked the 198 candidates to appear for the re-examination without fail. - Staff Reporter

Narendra sets fresh deadline

Sangareddy : Senior TRS leader and Union Minister A. Narendra has warned that the party will sever ties with the UPA and join hands with the NDA if statehood for Telangana is not declared before May 10.

Speaking to reporters at Andole after unveiling the statue of Swami Vivekananda near the Gurukula Pathasala on Saturday, he said: "We will highlight how the Congress has cheated the TRS and will sit next to NDA members in Parliament when its session begins on May 10," Mr. Narendra said. - Staff Reporter

Charge against finance firm

VIZIANAGARAM : Employees of a local private financier allegedly shaved eyebrows and a part of moustaches of one Sk. Shahnad alias Basha of Abad Street here on Saturday. Quoting the complaint's statement, the police said that Mr. Basha took Rs. 35,000 as loan from Hasmitha Finance and could not clear the balance amount after 21 weeks of prompt repayment.

When the financier began harassing his sureties he went to the office in the morning where the employees resorted to the act. -Correspondent

Brahma Samajam activist dead

Rajahmundry : Bramha Samajam activist and freedom fighter Janamanchi Kameswara Rao, 95, passed away on Saturday.

Rajahmundry MP U. Arun Kumar, Hitakarini Samajam chairman Challa Sankar Rao and others condoled the death of Kameswara Rao. - Staff Reporter

Assumes charge

TIRUMALA: G. Balaramaiah on Saturday assumed charge as the joint executive officer of the TTD. The post had fallen vacant after Muktheswar Rao was appointed as special officer for Operation Kolleru. — Staff Reporter

Dismissed from service

Hyderabad: The Government dismissed a Junior Assistant in Molaakalacheruvu mandal parishad development officer's office, N. Kowser Ansari, following his conviction in a corruption case. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested him seven years ago on charge of receiving Rs. 300 bribe from a person, according to a press release. Subsequently, a special court held him guilty of the charge.

Boating in KC canal

KURNOOL: The district administration is making arrangements for boat ride on the KC canal during summer. An amount of Rs 18.25 lakhs was sanctioned for impounding water up to five feet depth during summer months when the canal is closed. Boating would be allowed between April and June every summer.

Special cell to monitor water supply

ELURU: Eluru Municipal Corporation (EMC) has established a special cell at its office to monitor water supply at the instance of local MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas in a bid to tide over water crisis in certain parts of the city.

Four teams were constituted to monitor supply of drinking water in four zones. The MLA said steps were afoot to improve water supply situation with a sum of Rs. 15 lakhs.- Staff Reporter

Free training classes for students

Kakinada: Free training classes for students during summer vacations would be conducted at the PR Government Junior College from April 20 to May 20, according to M. Roofas Kumar, principal. He said these classes would be held in four categories - the first being for the students who wrote SSC examination to create awareness on Intermediate first year subjects, the second is for the Inter first year students to train them on second year subjects. The third is for the Inter failed students conducting special classes to them. The fourth is EAMCET coaching. - Correspondent

Midday meal workers stage dharna

Kakinada: A number of women working in the midday meal scheme have staged dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Saturday under the aegis of the CITU led union. They demanded among other things redress of the grievances of the implementing agencies, increasing of the quantum of the ration and their emoluments. Later, they called on the DRO and presented a memorandum. - Correspondent

Eleswaram SI in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Saturday arrested Sub-Inspector Goli Prakasa Babu and a constable China Veeraiah of Eleswaram police station in East Godavari district, on charge of accepting Rs. 2,000 bribe from a complainant.

Both the SI and constable tested positive when subjected to a chemical test. They were produced before the Court of Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases at Visakhapatnam. - Staff Reporter
