Jawan, militant killed in encounter

Eight soldiers wounded; search operation begins in Pampore

LOOKING FOR CLUES: An Army officer takes out a newspaper clip from the body of the militant killed in an encounter near Pampore on Sunday.

SRINAGAR : A jawan was killed and eight others were injurd when their convoy was ambushed by militants in the Kadlabal area of Pampore. A militant, said to be affiliated to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, was also killed in the encounter.

"At around 9.15 a.m. when an Army convoy was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar, militants hiding in Pampore fired upon the road opening party and one soldier was killed," Defence spokesman Lt. Col. Vijay Batra told The Hindu . He said that in the encounter that followed one militant was killed while the others managed to escape. Col. Batra said that keeping in view of the heavy rush of people "the troops exercised utmost restraint... ."

Army reinforcements have launched a search operation. The injured soldiers were admitted to the Base Hospital in Srinagar and were said to be out of danger.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to a local news agency.
