IMPHAL: Seventy-three trucks, loaded with essential items, were stranded on Sunday in Senapati district of Manipur due to an "indefinite economic blockade." The blockade began on Saturday midnight by a tribal students' union on Imphal-Guwahati NH 39 and Imphal-Silchar NH 53, official sources said. Supporters of the blockade halted 65 Manipur-bound trucks at Mao gate on the Manipur-Nagaland border point, they said. Another eight trucks were stranded at Kangpokpi area in Senapati district.
No security arrangements
Sources said that being Sunday no arrangements were being made to provide security to these stranded vehicles and added that they would be brought to the State capital on Monday with security.
Demands
The All-Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has imposed the blockade to press their demands, which included among other things filling of vacant posts of teachers in schools. PTI.
