dated March 27, 1956: Musicians of the Year

Srimathi M.S. Subbulakshmi and Mr. (Palghat) T.S. Mani Aiyar (mridangam) have been chosen as "Musicians of the Year" in the Carnatic vocal and Carnatic instrumental sections by the Sangeet Natak Akademi whose awards for musicians, dancers, actors and producers for 1956 were announced on March 25 by the General Council of the Akademi. The recipients of the other awards are: Hindustani vocal: Raja Bhayya Poonchwale; Hindustani instrumental: Bismillah Khan (shahnai artiste). Dance: Kathakali: Guru Kunju Kurup; Manipuri: Guru Amubi Singh. Drama: Acting: Ganpatrao Bodas. Directing and producing: The General Council of the Akademi nominated Prithviraj Kapoor for this award, but no award would be given since Prithviraj is a Fellow of the Akademi, which is the highest honour given by the body. Films: No Akademi awards were given this year in this section.
