Architects are not just engineers, but a tribe specialised in dealing with social and environmental aspects. After architecture was dissociated from EAMCET two years ago, its aspirants may have lost the chance of being called an engineer. Experts say the real gains are in the greater possibilities and glorious careers that lie ahead for students, who have completed Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). On behalf of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) conducts a special test -- Planning and Architecture Common Entrance Test (PACET) -- for admission into B.Arch, B.Plng and other related courses. The PACET basically focuses on testing students' talent in mental ability, analytical reasoning, general observation, visualising three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings, architectural awareness, drawing, imaginative comprehension and scores of other creative faculties.
Notification
Notification was issued on February 23 for PACET-2006, for admission to 5-year B.Arch, 4-year B.Plng and 6-year B.Arch (PTDC) and other courses. The test will be conducted on May 5. Applications will be sold at SPA JNTU, Masab Tank, Hyderabad; College of Engineering, JNTU, Anantapur; and Government Polytechnic, Vijayawada. Filled-in applications are being accepted and the last date without late fee is April 10 and with late fee April 17. Candidates should have passed Intermediate examination or related vocational courses and bridge courses conducted by Board of Intermediate Education (BIE). The candidates should have secured not less than 50 per cent marks in aggregate with mathematics and English as subjects.
Few colleges
Considering the increasing importance of architecture, Maharashtra, Karnataka and some other States have come up with a good number of colleges to teach the subject. In Tamil Nadu, they have 13 colleges, while Andhra Pradesh has only half this number. The dissociation of architecture and planning courses from EAMCET in the State is an attempt to make up for the delay already caused.PACET convenor Padmavathi Pervar says that architects have greater chances to prosper by starting private practice or working as consultants. An entry-level job fetches anywhere above Rs. 15,000 to an architect, who is well versed in computer aided designing (CAD). The boom in construction industry and housing is also throwing up a lot of opportunities. There are 520 seats in B.Arch course offered by seven colleges in the State. S.A.R. College of Architecture, an institute dedicated to development of architecture and established by Sunkara Appa Ra Memorial Trust, has brought out special preparatory material for helping students to face PACET. Architecture includes social and environmental aspects also. One who is neither a sculptor nor a painter cannot be an architect. Qualities of beauty, geometry, emotions, aesthetics and spiritual power run through the art and science of designing a building. It needs no further elaboration that a student aspiring to become an architect should strive hard to master the divine craft of architecture.
