Letters to the Editor
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's resignation as MP and National Advisory Council chairperson may be an act of sacrifice or a drama. Nevertheless, she has proved yet again that her detractors are capable of neither and that their paranoia nurtures her popularity. How many of our MPs, who profit from both membership of Parliament and another office under the state, can resign in a similar vein and exude the confidence of winning from their constituencies again?
M. Muthukrishnan,
* * * While one may not agree with the Congress' hyperbolic claims of Ms. Gandhi's sacrifice, one must concede that she is certainly taller than many other MPs who are in no mood to part with their dual posts. The obvious reason is that they do not share her confidence of being re-elected.
R. Venugopal,
* * * Whether Ms. Gandhi resigned with an intention of gaining political mileage or on moral grounds, she is much better than those leaders who are least affected by serious allegations and continue to cling to power.
M.D.S. Prabu,
* * * Ms. Gandhi, no doubt, has dealt the second masterstroke of her political career. The manner in which she is being hailed as an epitome of renunciation shows the nation's thirst for decent politics. One cannot but admire her handling of tricky political situations.
S. Ananthi,
* * * I fail to understand why so many criticise Ms. Gandhi and argue that her resignation was not an act of sacrifice. Did she ever claim it was? She has done the right thing by resigning without waiting for the Election Commission's verdict. A decision in her favour would have invited the wrath of her detractors anyway.
C.P. Sukumaran,
* * * A masterstroke, a face saving measure or an inevitable course opinions expressed by politicians are of little consequence. The resignation's impact on the common man, particularly the U.P. electorate, is what matters ultimately. Ms. Gandhi will certainly be a cause of worry for the BJP, the SP, and the BSP in the next election.
M. Bhimashankar,
* * * As expected, Jaya Bachchan's disqualification as Rajya Sabha member opened a Pandora's Box. By resigning in view of the gravity of the situation, Ms. Gandhi has shown respect for the law and the Election Commission.
J.P. Reddy,
