As many as 1,200 seats in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan schools will be filled through the Union Human Resource Development Minister's discretionary quota to be managed by a three-member committee, it was announced recently. Under norms approved by HRD Minister Arjun Singh, who is also KVS chairman, "due representation" will be given to: Children belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, other backward classes and minorities. Physically handicapped children. Girls who are single children of their parents. Children of single parent. Child victims of natural calamity or mass violence during last one year. Children whose parents serve in uniformed forces and are posted in anti-insurgency operations. Priority in admissions will additionally be given to: Recipients of National Bravery Award or Balshree Award. Child whose parent is a teacher and recipient of National Award for Teachers. Children who have shown special talent in the fine arts and have been recognised at the national or State level. The guidelines can be viewed on the website www.kvsangathan.nic.in. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Board of Governors met on July 8, 2005 and fixed the Sangathan Chairman's Discretionary Quota for Special Admissions at 1,200. At his request, the board met again on December 14, 2005 and decided that powers of Special Admissions be exercised by a three-member committee. The Minister has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Joint Secretary (Secondary Education) with KVS Commissioner as member and the Joint Commissioner (Administration) as Member-Secretary.
