`Call 1070 for model code violations'

Action taken on 32 cases: Collector

Pondicherry : District Collector and District Election Officer of Pondicherry G. Theva Needhi Dhas has said that production and sale of crackers in Pondicherry had been temporarily banned. Addressing newsmen here on Sunday, Mr. Dhas said that as per guidelines issued by the Election Commission, a toll free telephone (1070) has been installed on the premises of the office of the District Collector to receive complaints about violation of the model code of conduct.

Warns of stern action

The Election Vigilance Squads, comprising senior officers of the Police and Revenue departments would enquire into the complaints.However, those making false or unfounded complaints would subject themselves to stern action. The identity of complaints would not be disclosed.

Mr. Dhas said of 55 complaints of alleged violations of the model code received so far from different parts of the Union Territory, 32 cases had been investigated and actiontaken. The remaining cases were being probed.

Graffiti

Police had registered five cases for unauthorised display of graffiti in public places and three cases for violation of the provisions of the Representation of People Act.

The Collector said the Sub Divisional Magistrates of North and South wings of Pondicherry had directed 259 persons to execute bonds as contained in the provisions of Cr.P.C. to keep peace and good behaviour in the context of maintenance of law and order. Mr. Dhas also said that eight persons of a certain political party were arrested and criminal action initiated against them.
