NEW DELHI: The Delhi Residents' Welfare Association's Joint Front has strongly objected to the Union Urban Development Ministry's proposed mixed land use in residential areas stating that it would not only deface the city's neighbourhoods but also put extra pressure on civic amenities causing unnecessary problems and chaos in the Capital. Stating that changes in the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 promoting commercial activities in residential areas was not acceptable to the citizens of the Capital under any circumstances, the Front in a statement issued here has thanked the courts for issuing directions to check unauthorised constructions and illegal commercialisation besides taking corrupt civic officials to task. "The courts have given the Centre, Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi a unique opportunity to cleanse the system and the city of the mess created by blatant violation of building bylaws and commercial activities in residential colonies over the years. The situation as it exists today must no longer deprive law-abiding residents of their privacy or cause them to feel vulnerable for their security," the statement stated. The RWAs Front has also alleged that the civic body officials and local politicians were still making money by protecting some illegal buildings during the ongoing demolition drives. This must stop immediately and demolitions as per court orders should be done in a systematic manner, without favouritism or bias, to avoid any suspicion in public mind, the statement added.
