Multi-purpose stadiums for C'Wealth Games

Staff Reporter

Authority made a presentation in Melbourne

NEW DELHI: Just as the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground is playing host these days to athletics events and the Rod Laver Tennis Arena is witnessing performances by gymnasts, the Delhi Development Authority has decided to construct multi-purpose stadiums for the conduct of events during the Commonwealth Games-2010 here in Delhi.

Noting that world class stadiums would be made for the Games, DDA Vice-Chairman Dinesh Rai said on Friday that the Commonwealth Games Village coming up on the banks of the Yamuna would be "one of the best''. During the visit to Melbourne for the ongoing games there, he said DDA made a presentation before the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation as also the Commonwealth Games Executive and overall people were quite impressed with it though some suggestions were also made.

Stating that the stadiums being used for the games were mostly multi-purpose, Mr. Rai said in Delhi too the same model would be adopted as the income, maintenance and upkeep was better if they can be used for different purposes. Also, in the conduct of aquatic events, he said there was a lot of community participation and this was something that needed to be replicated here. DDA Member (Finance) A. K. Patnaik said the Authority would be spending about Rs 1,250 crores on the games of which Rs. 650 crores would be raised through public/private participation and about Rs. 500 crores would be sought from the Central Government as budgetary grant.

Mr. Patnaik said while the process for appointing consultants would be completed by May 2006, work is likely to start in early 2007.
