Chennai: The University of Madras has identified four possible locations for a new campus to commemorate its 150th year.

The proposed 150-acre campus is likely to come up at one of the following locations: Old Mahabalipuram Road, New Mahabalipuram Road, GST Road or Thiruvallur Road.

"Our request to the State Government for the land has received the highest attention," Vice-Chancellor S. P. Thyagarajan said at the varsity's senate meeting here on Saturday.

"It can be located in any of these places but I have asked that it be near an arterial road for easy access," he said. The State's decision was expected only after two or three months as elections were round the corner. The university would set up nine centres of excellence, including one for nanotechnology, on the new campus, which would be developed with Rs. 100 crore granted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Model institution

There were also plans to improve the present campuses. Mr. A master plan had been drawn up to landscape and provide proper entry roads to departments.

A building for a Centre for Data Management and Informatics to offer facilities for music, journalism and economics students would come up on the Chepauk campus, he said.
