Kolkata: West Bengal Communist Party of India (Marxist) Secretary and member of the party's Polit Bureau Anil Biswas (61) passed away here at 5.25 p.m. on Sunday. He is survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Biswas suffered a massive cerebral haemorrhage on March 18 after attending a meeting to finalise the strategy for the coming State Assembly elections. His condition remained critical since admission to a nursing home. A seven-member medical board attended on him. He underwent two surgeries for removal of blood clots in his brain. He was on life support system for the past eight days. Senior political leaders, including veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, Communist Party of India General Secretary A B. Bardhan and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee visited the nursing home in the past week. West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi visited the nursing home soon after receiving the death news. Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, also turned up. "I am deeply saddened to lose a political adversary," she said. Mr. Biswas' body will be taken to the party headquarters on Monday morning. From there it will brought to his residence. The last journey would be to the Nil Ratan Sircar Hospital where his body has been pledged. Flags in all offices of the party in the State have been lowered to half-mast.
