Theme lacks originality

Madhuchandralekha

Urvasi, the comedy queen, teaming up with her old time co-star Jayaram provides hilarious moments for the viewers in the film Madhuchandralekha. But the director Rajasenan is unable to infuse originality into the character of Chandramathy that she plays in the film. It is a stereotype from the past — a woman who loves her husband so much that she is willing to sacrifice everything for his happiness.

Chandramathy grows up as the darling of her four goldsmith brothers. When she meets Madhavan (Jayaram), he is a small-time `bhagavathar'. She falls in love with him, pursues him till Madhavan has no other option but to marry her. Soon after marriage, Madhavan's career graph begins to rise. By the time four children are born to them, Madhavan has become a national award winning playback singer. He begins to move among the elite in society where the unsophisticated and outspoken betel leaf chewing Chandramathy creates a lot of embarrassment for him. However, Madhavan takes everything in good humour. At this point a young woman Indulekha (Mamta) who is a great fan of Madhavan enters into their lives and becomes a family friend. Chandramathy discovers that Madhavan and Indulekha have a lot in common. She even hears her children innocently comparing her unfavourably with Indulekha. She begins to feel that she is unworthy of being the wife of such a famous singer and that Indulekha would be a better match for him. So, Chandramathy, the wife turns match-maker for her husband and tries to get him married to Indulekha. For that she even leaves her home without telling her family.

Madhavan announces at a press conference that he is going to marry Indulekha. The day of wedding arrives and everything is set for the ceremony. Then what happens? No prizes for guessing that right. Music has always been an integral part of Rajasenan's films and Madhuchandralekha is no exception. M. Jayachandran's music is outstanding. The songs Mallikapoove... , Manasil viriyunna malarane sneham... , Thulli thulli... are notable numbers. Lyrics are by Girish Puthencheri and Kanesh Punnoor. The casts include Sukumari, Vijayakumari, Bheeman Reghu, Harisree Asokan, Indrans, Kalasala Babu. The script is by Reghunath Paleri and K.P. Nambiathiri wields the camera. S.P. Venkatesh scores the background music. The film has been produced by Samad Mankada.
