NEW DELHI: Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) will soon be deployed in West Bengal during the forthcoming Assembly elections there. At a press conference here on Friday, SSB Director General Tilak Kak said the force has recruited 10,102 people and they were now undergoing training. After they complete their training, they will be deployed along the border.

The force has established 259 posts on Indo-Nepal border and 25 on Indo-Bhutan border. One frontier and two sector headquarters have also been set up. As a result of its efforts, the SSB seized 263 weapons and 1,670 kg of explosives and arrested 462 smugglers, 26 Maoists, 11 militants and 27 criminal elements in the past one year.
"The force has earned accolades for the splendid job being done in the convoy-protection duty of Bhutanese vehicles. The Bhutanese Government and bureaucrats have praised our work," he said. Apart from carrying out operations against criminal elements and militants, SSB has been very instrumental in motivating residents along the border by involving them in various projects and conducting free medical and veterinary camps for them.
