`Manufacturing holds key to development'

`Lean manufacturing' holds the key to efficiency, customer satisfaction, cost control and overall success Papers presented on subjects such as paradigm shifts, robotics, neural networks, fuzzy graphs, six sigma and zero defect manufacturing systems.

Coimbatore: When progressing from a developing to a developed economy, the manufacturing sector will be more important for India than the software or textile industries, said T.M. Gunaraja, National vice-president, Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata, here recently.

At a conference on intelligent manufacturing organised at the V.L.B. Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology, Mr. Gunaraja explained how companies could increase their productivity and profitability. He said that `lean manufacturing' held the key to efficiency, customer satisfaction, cost control and overall success. Instead of trying to fix the blame when something undesirable occurred, people in the business world should strive to solve problems even while respecting human dignity, he said.
