Air-India to regularise casual employees

A Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY: Paying heed to a longstanding demand of its casual employees at the airport here, Air-India has reportedly decided to take them on board with better emoluments in its subsidiary company, Air India Charters Ltd. (AICL), shortly, according to a statement.

As many as 160 people who had lost their houses and land to make way for the airport were appointed casual employees on daily wages and have been working here ever since its inauguration in 1999.

The decision to absorb these employees with better emoluments was reportedly arrived at following a marathon discussion between leaders of the Air-India Employees' Guild and the airline's Director (HRD), V.A. Ferreira, and the Executive Head for Kochi, M.K. Hingorani, at the airline's headquarters in Mumbai.

The casual employees will be re-designated `handymen' and provided a pay of Rs. 5,500. They will also enjoy Provident Fund benefits, their main demand, and be entitled to casual and privilege leaves.
